Notlar About: Carefully copied collection (majmūʻah) of poetic works opening with selections from the Dīwān of Ibn al-Fāriḍ (d.1235), followed by his celebrated Ṣūfī poem in tāʼ, Naẓm al-sulūk or al-Tāʼīyah al-kubrá and closing with al-Būṣīrī's (d.1296?) celebrated poem in praise of the Prophet, al-Kawākib al-durrīyah fī madḥ khayr al-barīyah or Qaṣīdat al-Burdah. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 983 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974). Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 132 Binding: Boards covered in textured black cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "ذكر اهل السلوك تائية ابن الفارض" ; sewn in white thread over two recessed cords ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Machine wove and laid papers of several different types ; opening type (through p.32) machine wove with watermark "Alex. Pirie & Sons | EXTRA STRONG" (see pp.2, 4, etc. and pp.66, 68), grayish in color ; next type (through pp.33-52) machine laid, sturdy, beige in color, no watermarks visible ; next another machine laid type with watermark "PAPETERIE DE RENAGE" (see pp.53-54, 63-64) ; finally two machine wove types, sturdy and beige in color (see pp.55-62, 69 to close). Decoration: Section headings and occasionally whole passages of text rubricated ; others in blue ink. Script: Naskh with influence of ruqʻah ; compact, modern hand in a thin to medium line ; partially but irregularly seriffed with right-sloping head-serif on occasional lām, slight effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders, open and closed counters, pointing somewhat in strokes rather than distinct dots, final yāʼ usually unpointed. Layout: Written in 17-23 lines per page with written area divided to two columns.
