Notlar	About: Fine copy of a selection of poems from the dīvān of ʻUrfī Shīrāzī, namely qaṣāʼid and ghazalīyāt. Accompanied by excerpts from other works and poems, as well a partial table of contents for a different work. \| Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 159 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper suggests early 17th century. Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 33. Ghazals of Urfi, etc." Binding: Pasteboards (quite thin, approaching semi-limp) covered in combed marbled paper (salmon, blue, etc.) with dark red-brown leather over spine and edges/turn-ins ; Type III binding (without flap) ; pastedowns/flyleaves in European laid paper ; sewn in pink thread, two stations ; only traces of primaries remain from worked endbands ; overal in poor condition with significant abrasion, lifting and losses of paper and leather, moisture damage, delamination of boards, etc. Support: European and non-European laid paper ; European laid paper with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart (horizontal), watermarks include crossbow in circle with trefoil above (compare Piccard 123860) and symbol looking like a lantern with A (compare countermark in Piccard 123862) in circle, some leaves tinted shades of light green or yellow, quite thin, transluscent, and crisp ; pp.94-114 in non-European laid paper (likely pre-1650, 17th century Persian) with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), no chain lines visible, and whole fibers visible ; flyleaves/pastedowns in European laid paper with crown star crescent watermark ; staining and tide lines ; some fire damage. Decoration: Some headings and keywords rubricated ; written area (including divided panels) of p.94-p.114 surrounded by gilt frame. Script: Mainly nastaʻlīq, sans serif with characteristic descent of words to baseline, superscript of final words and letters at end of many lines, characteristic letterforms , some contrast in thickness of horizontal and vertical strokes and horizontal strokes often elongated ; various excerpts (including odd leaves, likely incorporated as part of repairs/reinforcements, carrying table of contents for a different work) in naskh-nastaʻlīq. Layout: Written mainly in 15 lines per page with written area divided to two columns, final line of each ghazal centered ; pp.94-114, written in roughly 12 lines per page with written area divided to set off four lines on the diagonal (two in each column), two lines at the center of the panel (one in each column), and two lines running vertically ; frame-ruled. Collation: i, I+1 (3), I (5), 3 V(35), V+1 (46), IV (54), II (58), i ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves ; skips two pages between pp.78-79).
