Ms. 958 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper, etc. suggest mid to late 18th century (see Walz, "The Paper trade of Egypt and the Sudan," 83-84. Replacement leaves likely late 19th or even early 20th century. Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 107 Binding: Boards covered in textured black cloth (repeating vegetal pattern) with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "شرح السنوسي للمقدمة" ; sewn in white thread over three recessed cords ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: European laid paper of at least two "raisin" types, both appearing in some quires ; opening type with 11-12 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 24 mm. apart (vertical), and watermark of grapes (raisin) under cartouche and crown (see pp.8, 12, 16, 18, etc.), sturdy and well-burnished, dark cream to beige in color, minor ink burn ; other type with 11 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 18-20 mm. apart (vertical), and watermark of grapes (raisin) under cartouche with "C D..." and crown above (see pp.92, 104, etc.), sturdy and well-burnished, cream in color ; replacement sections on leaves of machine wove paper, well-burnished to glossy, light brown in color. Decoration: Keywords, abbreviation symbols (mainly sigla and two-teeth stroke overlining keywords) rubricated. Script: Naskh ; clear, spacious Egyptian hand in a medium line ; serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left, pointing in distinct dots, alif maqṣūrah usually pointed as yāʼ ; replacement sections (pp.161-184, 285-290) supplied in a different hand, larger, bolder and more carefully executed. Layout: Written in 11 lines per page ; frame-ruled.
