Ms. 84 Origin: As appears in marginal correction at close on p.393, composition completed 27 Jumādá II 969 [ca. 4 March 1562]. Details of transcription not provided. Paper, hand, decoration, etc. would suggest 17th or possibly late 16th century. Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 30. Al-Ashbah wa 'l-nazair." Binding: Pasteboards covered in dark red leather; once Type II binding (with flap, impression and soiling on front flyleaf) though only upper cover and spine (repaired with subtle dark red patches at head and tail) remain; doublures in dark, red-brown leather, doublure hinges in dark brown leather; upper cover carries large blind-stamped mandorla (NSd 7 Déroche class.) with pendants to which gold paint was later applied and tooled border; sewn in rose colored thread, two stations; worked chevron endbands in spring / mint green and pink, fairly good condition; overall in somewhat poor condition with lower cover and flap lost, tears and staining to back flyleaf, lifting and losses of spine leather; subtle repairs to board edges and spine in dark red leathers; housed in box for protection. Support: non-European (likely Persian) laid paper with fairly distinct laid lines (some sagging) spaced roughly 6-7 laid lines per cm. and irregular chain lines sporadically visible, some inclusions, fairly crisp and transluscent though sturdy, well-burnished ; added front flyleaves of European paper with watermark "IL GRAN MASSO." Decoration: Beautifully illuminated titlepiece on 'title page' (p.1) executed in gold, blue, white, greed, red, pink, etc. with cartouche carrying title and medallion (shamsah) carrying an authorship statement; gold rule borders; red dots serving as textual dividers; headings and keywords rubricated. Script: Naskh; small, neat Egyptian or Turkish hand in a medium to bold line; serifless with slight effect of inclination to the left, pointing mainly in distinct dots, though strokes also used for three dots, kāf mashqūqah preferred, point of final and free-standing nūn either nearly assimilated with stroke of narrow bowl or set down within wide bowl; mainly vocalized; passage following text and genealogical diagram in a different hand. Layout: Written in 23 lines per page; impression of ruling board evident. Collation: iii, IV+1 (9), 18 V (189), IV+1 (198), i ; chiefly quinions; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals skipping initial leaf; catchwords present; pagination added later in pencil, Western numerals.
