Notlar About: Careful copy of assorted excerpts from al-Ṭabīʻīyāt, the section on natural sciences from Ibn Sīnā's Kitāb al-Shifāʼ, opening with excerpts from Kitāb al-Nafs (fann 6), al-Nabāt (fann 7), al-Ḥayawān (fann 8), al-Samāʻ wa al-ʻālam (fann 2), and al-Kawn wa-al-fasād (fann 3) and bound together with what appears to be a work on ʻilm al-kalām, as well as a working draft of an anonymous treatise on modern philosophy, addressing Hegel, etc., the opening page of which appears to have been mistakenly bound into Isl. Ms. 913 (see p.3 of that volume). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 916 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974). Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 65 Binding: Boards covered in dark green cloth with dark green leather over spine (quarter binding) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "بقاء النفس ابن سمنا [كذا]| J.H.D." ; sewing difficult to examine, but appears to be over three recessed cords ; stuck-on endbands (blue and white stripe) ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Lined / ruled wove paper of at least two different types. Decoration: Section headings and keywords rubricated or in purple ink (multiple shades of red also used). Script: Ruqʻah ; two or three compact hands ; opening hand (also supplying a few other sections) quite neat and carefully executed in a bold line, serifless and freely ligatured with mainly closed counters, strong horizontal character adhering consistently to the baseline, pointing somewhat careless and in strokes rather than distinct dots ; section headings in naskh or tawqīʻ ; from p.19 to p.178, a quick hand in a medium line with slight effect of inclination to the right ; from p.179 to close, hand similar to the opening hand but in a much thinner line. Layout: Written mainly in 25 lines per page. Collation: In section carrying Kitāb al-Samāʻ wa al-ʻālam, pagination in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals (appearing on every other page) and one quire numbered (see p.219) ; in section carrying draft treatise on modern philosophy, (p.237 to close) verso of each leaf left blank and foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (mistakenly repeats p.291 two additional times).
