Ms. 460 Origin: As appears in colophon (fol.193b), copying finished on the 8th of Ramaḍān 991 [ca. 25 September 1583]. Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. Former shelfmark: From inner front cover "IL 52" (likely supplied by Yahuda). Binding: Pasteboards faced with dark brown leather and now edged in deep purple leather (leather faced and edged framed binding, edging may represent a repair or other intervention); Type III binding (without flap); pastedowns and flyleaves in bright, hot pink surface-dyed, coated wove paper; upper and lower covers each bear blind-stamped central mandorla with detached pendants and tooled and gold-painted border accents; now sewn in golden yellow colored thread, two stations; worked chevron endbands in golden yellow and purple; likely not original to codex (taller and slightly wider); overall in fair condition with minor abrasion and lifting of leather. Support: non-European (likely Arab) laid paper, perhaps of more than one type, mainly with roughly 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical, somewhat indistinct) and chain lines grouped in threes with 12-14 mm. between chains and 38-40 between groups (see p.360, 372, etc.), somewhat cloudy formation, quite sturdy, burnished; several leaves of European laid paper with anchor in circle watermark (p.60, 62, 222, 304, etc.); some leaves tinted beige or pale salmon. Decoration: Simple filled gold headpiece (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ) and gold rule-border on incipit page; text rubricated with text of Qurʼān in red and tafsīr in black. Script: Naskh; small, compact Syrian or Egyptian hand (variation in line thickness especially in final folia, though appears to be same hand with different pens); virtually serifless with very slight effect of words descending to baseline, straight asecenders, curvilinear descenders, pointing mainly in distinct dots (though curved stroke often used for three dots), alif maqṣūrah pointed as yāʼ, kāf mashqūqah preferred; partially vocalized. Layout: Written in 21 lines per page. Collation: ii, II+1 (5), 18 V (185), I (187), III (193), ii; chiefly quinions; catchwords present, rubricated if following text is rubricated; pagination added later in pencil, Western numerals. Colophon: "Scribal," triangular, reads: "تم الكتاب المبارك بحمد الله وعونه وحسن توفيقه وصلى الله على سيدنا محمد واله وصحبه وسلم تسليما كثيرا وحسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل بتاريخ نهار الاحد المبارك ثامن شهر رمضان المعظم من شهور سنة احد وتسعين وتسعمائة" Explicit: "الضالين وهم النصارى ونكتة البدل افادة ان المهتدين ليسوا يهودا ولا نصارى والله اعلم بالصواب واليه المرجع والمآب تم" Incipit: "سورة الكهف مكية الاواصر [...؟] الاية مائة وعشر ايات وخمس عشرة اية بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم الحمد هو الوصف بالجميل ثابت..." Some marginal corrections with such correction marks (signes-de-renvoi) as three dots appearing above mistake and above correction in margin, and four dots over an omission (see examples on fol.58a, 60a, 83a, 109a, etc.).
