Notlar About: Fine copy of the commentary by Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Mubārakshāh al-Bukhārī (d. ca. 740/1340) on Ḥikmat al-ʻayn, the work of metaphysics and natural sciences by Najm al-Dīn ʻAlī ibn ʻUmar al-Kātibī al-Qazwīnī (d. 657/1276). Ends abruptly in "al-Baḥth al-thālith fī ithbāt al-nafs al-nāṭiqah". | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 121 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper suggests latter 17th century (post 1650). Accompanying materials: Slip with writing exercises (paginated pp.121-122). Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 66. Hikmat al-ain, with commentary." Binding: Pasteboards covered in brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in beige laid paper ; doublure hinges in brown leather ; upper and lower covers bear blind-stamped scalloped mandorla and pendants with floral vegetal composition (compare Déroche class. OSd 1), accompanied by border in tooled fillets framing a series of s-shaped stamps ; design continues on envelope flap ; sewn in dark blue thread, two stations, though most quires are quite loose ; worked endbands in red and green, in poor condition ; overall in poor condition with significant abrasion, staining, some lifting and losses of leather, etc. ; numerous repairs in tan leather ; quite ill-fitting and perhaps originally intended for a smaller codex. Support: European laid paper with 14-15 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and chain lines spaced roughly 24 mm. apart (horizontal) ; foolscap watermark (similar to Heawood 2022) ; fairly thick and burnished ; two added bifiolia (see pp.105-108 and pp.159-162) in a different European laid paper ; much tearing, staining, and moisture damage. Decoration: Section headings, keywords, and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; overlining and textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red. Script: Naskh ; bold Turkish (?) hand with Persianate features ; virtually serifless ; both open and closed counters ; tapered descenders ; kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred with shaqq appearing even on final kāf ; lām alif ligature in which the tail of the lām curves around and descends to form the alif, terminating at the base of the lām and thus forming a closed loop ; dot of final nūn set low in bowl ; pointing mainly in bold distinct dots ; occasionally two dots appear as inverted comma ; rounded but upright ; mainly adhering to baseline but occasional descent letters or words to baseline. Layout: Written in 15 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident). Collation: 6 IV (48), V (58), 2 IV(74), V (84), 10 IV (164) ; chiefly quaternions ; final word of last line of verso repeated at the beginning of the first line on following recto, but lacking in some sections ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes insert and mistakenly skips two pages between pp.195-196). Title supplied by cataloguer. Ms. codex. Bookplate of British Museum, London on interior of upper cover, "British Museum, London. No. 66. Hikmat al-ain, with commentary." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "368" in Western numerals on 'title page' (p.1) ; on blue-tinted paper pasted on 'title page' (p.1), a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا على ان لا يخرج من بيت الكتب الملتصق بداري الا لعلماء سكنوا بارضروم بكفيل مرعى اورهن قوي وانا الفقير اليه عز شانه السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده القاضي بمدينة ارضروم في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; seal of Solomon inscription (with greatest name of God / al-Ism al-Aʻẓam) and kabīkaj invocation on 'title page' (p.1) ; includes interlinear and extensive marginal glosses ; occasional corrections.
