Notlar About: Early copy of the second part of a work of pious devotions (anecdotes of holy men, homilies, traditions, etc.) attributed to the popular saint al-Ḥurayfīsh. End wanting. Description provided by Maxim Romanov. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 519 Origin: Lacks dated colophon but may be 15th century as suggested by paper. Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slips in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and spine label, "IL 151" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Pasteboards covered in burnished and colored paper ; Type II binding (once with flap, though now missing) ; resewn ; endbands lacking ; in poor condition with much wear and abrasion ; some moisture damage ; boards delaminating ; numerous leather repairs ; lower cover detaching at spine ; entire flap missing ; housed in box for protection. Support: non-European laid paper ; chain lines running horizontally appear to be grouped in threes with roughly 11-12 mm. between the chain lines and roughly 45 mm. between groups ; laid lines running vertically with roughly 8 laid lines per cm. ; rather thick and burnished ; a number of leaves are delaminating. Decoration: Textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red ; text rubricated with section headings, subsection headings, keywords, etc. in red. Script: Naskh ; fine Syrian or Egyptian hand ; sans serif ; alif maqṣūrah is often with dots ; freely ligatured with lām and alif almost always joined from above (looking like inverted "U") and dāl and rāʼ joined to following hāʼ; bar of kāf often missing ; alif of قال often arches over qāf supplying otherwise absent pointing ; swooping final nūn looking more like elongated rāʼ ; occasional vocalization without consistency. Layout: Written in 13 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: V-1 (9), V(19), V-4 (25), 5 V(75), VI(87), 4 V(127), 2 VI(151), 2 V(171), V-8 (173), 3 V(203), IV(211), 6 V(271), V-1 (280), IV-6 (282) ; chiefly quinions, though several irregular quires and missing leaves ; Hindu-Arabic numerals appearing near the beginning of each quire seem to provide quire numbering ; catchwords present, though occasionally cut off or missing ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during cataloguing. Title from inscription on fol.1a (p.1). Ms. codex. A few study/reading notes appear on fol.1a (p.1) ; an almond shaped seal impression appears on interior of upper cover (inscription illegible) ; a few ownership statements appear on fol.1a (p.1) ; fairly clean copy with very few marginal corrections or ammendments.
