Binding: Pasteboards covered in red-brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings, doublure hinges, and lining of envelope flap in shell marbled paper (pink and brown) ; fine printed fabric in yellow, blue and pink lining fore-edge flap ; upper and lower covers bear blind-tooled arrangement of rosette-shaped stamps forming a central diamond-shaped ornament and accents along with border in s-shaped stamps ; sewn in cream thread, two stations ; endbands virtually gone, only traces of primaries remain ; in poor condition with much abrasion, staining, some delaminating of boards, fore-edge flap detaching from lower cover, lower cover detaching at spine, a few loose quires, etc. Support: European laid paper with 13 laid lines per cm. (horizontal) and chain lines (vertical) spaced 26 mm. apart ; watermarks include an eagle and scrollwork with lion rampant (compare Heawood 1262) ; fairly well-burnished and smooth. Decoration: Richly decorated polychrome double-page opening with scalloped dome headpieces in green and red filled with swirling vegetal pattern and surmounted by vertical stalks (tīgh) accompanied by rectangular panels carrying the opening text (al-Fātiḥah facing opening of Sūrat al-Baqarah), headings and the āyah "انه لقرآن كريم في كتاب مكنون لا يمسه الا المطهرون وينزل من رب العالمين" ; entire piece is bordered by a frame in red and green with rule-border at some distance in the margin ; verse dividers in the form of stylized red circles appear throughout ; rule-border surrounds written area throughout ; text rubricated with sūrah headings, juzʼ markers, etc. in red. Script: Naskh ; elegant Ottoman hand ; partially seriffed with occasional right-sloping head-serifs on most vertical shafts in the majority of the text ; effect of tilt to the left ; fully vocalized. Layout: Written in 15 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident). Collation: i, VI+1 (13), V+1 (24), 9 VI(132), VII (146), 6 VI(218), V (228), 9 VI(336), II (340) ; chiefly sexternions ; final leaf left blank ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes front flyleaf).
