Notlar About: Careful copy of an abridgment (perhaps by the copyist) of Abū ʻAlī Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad Miskawayh's (d. 1030) treatise on ethics, Tahdhīb al-akhlāq wa-taṭhīr al-aʻrāq. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 973 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974). Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 122 Binding: Boards covered in dark green cloth with dark green leather over spine (quarter binding) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "الطهارة والتهذيب | ابن مسكويه| J.H.D." ; sewn in white thread over two recessed cords ; stuck-on endbands (blue and white stripe) ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Wove paper both lined / ruled and unruled ; inner flyleaves in laid paper. Decoration: Text executed entirely in red ink. Script: Ruqʻah ; quick, compact hand in thin to bold line (line thickness changes) ; serifless and freely ligatured with mainly closed counters, effect of inclination to the left and of words descending to baseline, pointing somewhat careless and in strokes rather than distinct dots. Layout: Written in 10-16 lines per page. Collation: ii, IV (8), 2 VI(32), VIII (48), X+1 (69), VIII (85), VII (99), ii ; pages between sections (corresponding mainly to gatherings) left blank, with some serving as 'title pages' (see pp.19, 43, 67, 99, 141, 173) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inner flyleaves). Explicit: "شفاءها بالاستنباط مما قد ذكرناه والله يتولي هداه وليكن هذا اخر ما اردنا تلخيصه من متن تهذيب الاخلاق وتطهير الاعراق والسلام على من اتبع الهدى آمين" Incipit: "اللهم انا نتوجه اليك ونسعي نحوك ونجاهد نفوسنا في طاعتك ونركب الصراط المستقيم الذي نهجته لنا الى مرضاتك ... وبعد فالغرض من وضع هذه الرسالة ان نبين الاخلاق التي هي اسباب السعادة ..."
