Notlar About: Careful copy of what appears to be the latter sections from an abridgment of Mullā Ṣadrā Shīrāzī's (d.1641) al-Mabdaʼ wa-al-maʻād, opening in al-Maqālah al-thālithah of al-Fann al-awwal (compare Isl. Mss. 980 and 965). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 979 Origin: Lacks dated scribal colophon ; likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974). Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 128 Binding: Boards covered in black textured cloth ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a geometric pattern (resembling a scale pattern) in dull gold ; cover gold-stamped with "المبدأ والمعاد" ; sewn in white thread over two recessed cords ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Machine wove paper. Decoration: Text executed entirely in a pinkish-red ink. Script: Ruqʻah ; quick, compact hand in a thin to medium line ; serifless and freely ligatured with effect of inclination to the left and of words descending to baseline, mainly closed counters, pointing somewhat careless and in strokes rather than distinct dots, final yāʼ usually unpointed. Layout: Written mainly in 10-11 lines per page. Collation: i, X (20), IV-1 (27), i ; one gathering of ten bifolia followed by an anomalous quaternion ; pages between sections (corresponding to gatherings) left blank, one serving as section 'title page' (see p.41) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization. Title from inscription on 'title page' (p.1). Ms. codex. On upper pastedown, label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory number, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No. 7923" ; UM Library inscription on p.3 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-13-51 | 71955" ; a few marginal corrections.
