Notlar About: Composite manuscript representing the second of four volumes of al-Baghawī's commentary on the Qurʼān, consisting of two sections: an earlier, original section (through p.408) treating Sūrat al-Māʼidah (5) to Sūrat al-Ḥijr (15), and a later addition (p.409-close) treating Sūrat al-Nahl (16) to Sūrat al-Kahf (18). Contents listing on flyleaf at opening (p.4). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 454 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.408, original (now opening) section copied by Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan ibn Abī Shāmah al-Ḥanbalī al-Dārānī with transcription completed 21 Dhū al-Ḥijjah 840 [ca. 26 June 1437] in madrasat Shaykh al-Islām Abī ʻUmar in Damascus. As appears in colophon on p.519, transcription of added section completed 29 Ramaḍān 1103 [ca. 14 June 1692]. Accompanying materials: Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. Former shelfmark: From front flyleaf and spine label, "IL 344a I" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip in Isl. Ms. 453). Binding: Pasteboards covered in dark brown leather with red leather repair to spine ; Type III binding (without flap), likely not original to codex (traces of envelope flap suggest original binding was Type II) ; doublures (board linings) in an elegant marbled paper (mainly in pink, dark blue, and lime green) ; upper hinge and repair to lower cover in green textile ; upper and lower covers carry large blind-stamped (with tan leather recessed onlay) mandorla (filled with vegetal composition, compare Déroche class. NA 6) with gold-painted accents and tooled pendants (a cluster of rosette stamps), as well as tooled and gold-painted border ; sewn in pink thread, two stations, many threads broken ; worked chevron endbands in poor condition, significant losses to headband especially with core exposed ; overall in somewhat poor condition with some abrasion and staining, flap lost, etc. ; repairs in red leather (also damaged) ; housed in box for protection. Support: Earlier, original section on non-European laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (20 in roughly 25 mm., horizontal), chain lines (four groups of three visible in some bifolia, see pp.132-33 etc.) with 8-11 mm. between chains and 44-46 mm. between groups, dark cream with some inclusions, well-burnished, fairly smooth ; flyleaves, replacement leaves and added section on European laid paper with 7 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines (vertical) spaced 28 mm. apart, three crescents watermark (see p.414, 96 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, similar to Heawood 866), and "V C" under trefoil countermark (see p.410, 412), creamy, well-burnished, with some staining and tide lines. Decoration: In original section, sūrah headings and Qurʼānic text being commented upon rubricated ; in later addition, sūrah headings and keywords introducing Qurʼānic excerpts rubricated, Qurʼānic text overlined in red Script: Naskh and nastaʻlīq (talik) ; opening original section in naskh, an elegant Syrian hand in a thin to medium line, serifless with mainly closed counters, descenders more rectilinear (though final yāʼ more curvilinear and sweeping), extension of horizontal strokes, bowl of final nūn dramatically sweeping, pointing in distinct dots, kāf occasionally without shaqq ; later added section (and replacement leaves, pp.69-76) in nastaʻlīq (talik), elegant Turkish hand in a medium to bold line, serifless with effect of tilt to the right and of words descending to baseline, mainly closed counters, pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots. Layout: Written in 27 lines per page. Collation: ii, IV+1 (9), 19 V(199), I+1 (202), 5 V(252), IV (260) ; chiefly quinions ; inner bifolia of fourth quire (pp.69-76) on replacement leaves supplied with later addition ; catchwords present ; quire numbering in the form of whole words on the upper outer corner of the recto of the opening leaf of each quire in the earlier section only ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves and added leaves).
