Ms. 91 Origin: As appears in colophon on fol.404b, copied by Saʻd ibn ʻAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʻAlī ibn Muslim ibn Sulaymān. Copying finished ("qad awqafa ʻinān al-qalam ʻan al-sayr fī maydān al-kitābah wa-al-raqm...") between noon and early afternoon of Tuesday, beginning of Dhū al-Qaʻdah, in the year 1157 [December 1744] in Sin a mahalle of Pāchān (ie Paçan, possibly the locality in Van now known as Topsakal in or in Trabzon now known as Maraşlı cf Türkiye Yerleşim Birimleri Envanteri = Index Anatolicus). Scribal verses and a note on the exemplar (a copy that had been copied from a copy of the author) appear in the copyist's hand adjacent to the colophon. Accompanying materials: a. scrap of paper with notes, sums, and seal impressions (one dated 1301 [1883 or 4]) between fol.56-57 -- b. tinted leaf from another text between fol.365-366. Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 155. Commentary on Multaka al-abhur." Binding: Pasteboards covered with dark red leather; Type II binding (with flap); upper and lower covers carry blind-stamped central mandorla in simple vegetal design (very worn and difficult to make out but seemingly not symmetrical) as well as blind-tooled rosettes and lines forming a panel design surrounding the central ornament; design continues on flap; sewn in heavy rose thread, two stations; traces of worked endbands (head and tailband cores and primaries) though with much loss; overall in somewhat poor condition though with sound sewing and attachment to text block, upper cover detaching via split repair, abrasion, staining, etc.; several reapirs to spine in dark brown leathers. Support: Mainly European laid paper with roughly 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 27-30 mm. apart (horizontal), and three crescents (tre lune) watermark (roughly 85 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, see pp.32, 64, 218, 220, etc.), quite dense and sturdy, cream in color, well-burnished; several leaves at close in a thinner European laid paper; flyleaves added at front and end of the textblock are of still a different European laid paper. Decoration: Text rubricated; overlinings, chapter headings and section headings in red. Script: Naskh; clear Turkish / Eastern Anatolian hand in a medium line; virtually serifless with slight effect of inclination to the left, occasional slight effect of words descending to baseline, pointing mainly in strokes rather than distinct dots, some sharp, straight descenders (rāʼ, etc.), freely ligatured with point of nūn often assimilated with bowl, elsewhere point fully encircled by bowl; many glosses in the same hand as the main text. Layout: Written in 23 lines per page. Collation: iv, II (4), 4 V (44), IV (52), 2 V (72), VI (84), 8 V (164), V+1 (175), 4 V (215), IV (223), 14 V (363), V-1 (372), 2 V (392), VI (404), 7 (411), i; chiefly quinons; quire signatures (numbering) in the form of "راس الكراس ٢", etc. on outer corner of the first folio of each quire beginning from the second quire and continuing through the seventeenth, thereafter marked inconsistently and without number (i.e., "راس الكراس" only); catchwords present, nearly centered under the final line of text on the verso of each folio; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals, begins following incipit page with "٢", skips a leaf and repeats "۵۳" on two separate leaves in error; pagination in pencil, Western numerals (referenced in cataloguing); fol.4a-5b and fol.405a-405b are blank and unmarked apart from a stray line of the table of contents and a few notes.
