Ms. 590 Origin: As appears in colophon at close of Qiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʼ (p.402), copied by Ibrāhīm ibn Muṣṭafá with transcription completed 23 Rajab 1164 [ca. 17 June 1751]. Transcription of Qiṣṣat Aṣḥāb al-Kahf contemporary. Accompanying materials: Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and fore edge flap label, "IL 278a" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Pasteboards covered in dark red leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in untinted laid paper, hinges in printed mottle paper, envelope flap lined in marbled paper (mainly lime green, pin, and dark lavender) ; upper and lower covers carry blind-stamped mandorla (filled with vegetal decoration, compare Déroche class. NSd 7) with tooled rosette pendants and accents, as well as tooled border in a series of s-shaped stamps flanked by blind rules ; sewn in white thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in white and red, good condition ; overall in fair condition with some abrasion, lifting and minor losses of leather on upper board, etc. ; spine repair in cream textile (linen), holding detached upper cover to textblock. Support: European laid paper with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 23 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermarks of crown with name and grapes below (see p.8, 10, etc.), "LANGUADOC" (see p.24, 28, etc.), etc. ; beige in color, thin and crisp though dense and sturdy, well-burnished to glossy. Decoration: Keywords and section headings rubricated ; overlining in red ; simple headpiece at opening of Qiṣṣat Aṣḥāb al-Kahf on p.40, consisting of red, line-drawn semi-circular pieces ; textual dividers in the form of red discs ; written area throughout surrounded by red rule-border. Script: Naskh ; an elegant Iraqi [?] hand with Turkish and Persianate features ; partially but irregularly seriffed with right-sloping head-serifs, marked effect of tilt to the left, elongation of horizontal strokes, curvilinear descenders, pointing mainly in conjoined dots. Layout: Written in 21 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: i, I+1 (3), V-1 (12), 2 V(32), 2 IV+1 (50), 16 V(210) ; chiefly quinions ; final leaves left blank ; catchwords present ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes leaves carrying table of contents and excludes final leaves left blank).
