Notlar About: Careful copy of the commentary by al-Shaykh Ibrāhīm al-Bājūrī (d.1860) on al-Būṣīrī's celebrated poem in praise of the Prophet, al-Kawākib al-durrīyah fī madḥ khayr al-barīyah more commonly known as al-Burdah. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 1001 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.164, copied by al-Sayyid Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥājj ʻUmar al-Afandī al-Rifāʻī al-Shāfiʻī apparently in Kafr Takhārīm where he was then residing with transcription completed 17 Jumādá II 1276 [ca. 11 January 1860]. As appears in preceding authorial colophon (also on p.164), composition completed in Shawwāl 1229 [September-October 1814]. Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 150 Binding: Boards covered in black textured cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "حاشية البردة" ; now sewn in white thread, five stations ; overall in fairly good condition with minor abrasion and pest damage. Support: European laid paper of two types ; opening type (through p.40) with 8-9 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 25-28 mm. apart (horizontal), three crescents / tre lune watermark (65 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, see pp.6, 10, 12, etc.) and countermark with letters R C F visible (see pp.4, 8, 12, 20, 22, 34, etc.), sturdy, cream to buff in color, lightly burnished ; from p.41 to close, a type with 9-10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 27 mm. apart (horizontal), three crescents / tre lune watermark (75 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, see pp.46, 50, 56, etc.) and countermark "Fi PALAZZUOLI" (see pp.46, 52, 54, 58, 60, 90, 166, etc. and compare Vollers O883, Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig), sturdy, cream to buff in color, lightly burnished. Script: Naskh ; compact, somewhat angular Syrian hand in a medium line ; partially though irregularly seriffed (mainly serifless) with effect of tilt to the left, slight effect of words descending to baseline, free assimilation of letters and dots, pointing mainly in conjoined dots, alif maqṣūrah pointed as yāʼ. Layout: Written mainly in 21 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: i, 8 V(80), II (84), i ; quinions with closing binion ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (mistakenly repeats p.124 and p.138).
