Ms. 561 Origin: According to colophon on fol.110a, copied by "Muḥammad ibn al-marḥūm al-maghfūr lahu al-ʻallāmah al-shaykh Muḥammad al-Miṣrī thumma al-Jabalāwī" with transcription completed ("wa-qad waqaʻa al-farāgh min naskhih...") on Sunday, 15 Rabīʻ II 1084 [ca. 30 July 1673] likely while residing in al-Lādhiqīyah [Latakia, Syria] ("nazīl thaghr al-Lādhiqīyah al-maḥrūsah"). Compare circumstances of transcription for Isl. Ms. 565, executed by the same copyist. Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. Former shelfmark: From inner front cover, "IL 74" and from recto of front flyleaf, "B.II.226" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Pasteboards covered in green/teal cloth; Western style binding with squares though tight-back; pastedowns and flyleaves in beige machine wove paper; now sewn over three recessed cords; likely not original to codex; in fairly good condition with some staining, etc. Support: European laid paper ; mainly a type with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 33 mm. apart (horizontal), and arms watermark with cross surmounted by crown and flanked by lions above two circles (upper with "M B" and lowest empty, see pp.46, 58, 192, etc.), thin and crisp though sturdy, cream in color, well-burnished ; a few leaves in another type with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 30 mm. apart (horizontal) and crown-star-crescent watermark (see front flyleaf, p.22, etc.), sturdy and thicker than the other type. Decoration: Text rubricated with headings in red. Script: Naskh ; small, compact ’Syrian’ hand in a narrow line ; partially though irregularly serriffed (mainly on lām of definite article) with effect of tilt to the left and slight effect of words descending to basline, curvilinear descenders, pointing mainly in distinct dots, many closed counters, kāf mashqūqah preferred (even final kāf). Layout: Written in 25 lines per page; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident). Collation: ii, V (10), I (12), VII (26), 8 V (106), 4 (110), i; catchwords present; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals, from fol.1; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, corresponds to foliation. Colophon: "Scribal," triangular, reads: "تم الكتاب بعون الملك المعين وقد وقع الفراغ من نسخه عروة [؟] يوم الاحد خامس عشر ربيع الثاني من شهور سنة اربعة وثمانين والف من الهجرة النبوية على يد ناسخه ... العبد الفقير الى مولاه الصمد محمد ابن المرحوم المغفور له العلامة الشيخ محمد المصري ثم الجبلاوي نزيل ثغر اللاذقية المحروسة غفر الله له ولوالديه ولمشايخه ولكل المسلمين وصلى الله على سيدنا محمد وعلى اله وصحبه وسلم امين" Explicit: "وعن الشافعي لا يدخل في الوصية الا احمق او لص والله اعلم" Incipit: "الحمد لله على ما انعم علينا من علم الشرائع والاحكام وهدانا الى معرفة ما لم نعلم بهداية الملك العلام ... اما بعد فاني لما رايت الهمم راغبة عن المطلوبات ... فاستصفيت المسائل المهمات من الفتوى المعتبرات ... وسميته بجامع الفتوى ... كتاب الطهارة" Title from opening on fol.1b. Death notice, inscribed by the son of the deceased, found on verso of second front flyleaf, and dated 14 Rajab 1142 [ca. 2 February 1730] reads: "بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم الحمد لله على كل حال والصلاة والسلام على سيدنا ومسندنا وشفيعنا في المعاد والمآل محمد وصحبه واله خير صحب وخير ال امين فقد انتقل بالوفاة الى رحمة الله تعالى ورضوانه واسكنه [...؟] فراديسه في اعلا جنانه والدي وشيخي ومرشدي الحاج محمد نور الله مفتي جبله وشيخ المقام الادهم فهو امام المدرسين ومربي المريدين ضحوة نهار الخميس المبارك فهو الرابع عشر من شهر رجب الفرد الحرام سنة اثنين واربعين وماية والف هجرية على صاحبها افضل صلاة وازكى سلام واعظم تحية والحمد لله رب العالمين"; many marginal corrections (fol.18b, 70a, etc.), including those indicating variants (fol.105b) and clarifying cacographical errors (see fol.17b); notabilia (fol.22a, 23a, 29a, 49b ,etc.); a number of glosses marked "لسان الحكام" and "قاضي خان" (fol.28a, 28b, 30a, 31a, 31b, 70b, 72a-77b, etc.).
