Notlar About: Fine copy of Ibn al-Ḥājib's (d.1249) two concise grammatical treatises, al-Kāfiyah, on naḥw (syntax), and al-Shāfiyah on ṣarf (morphology). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 223 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper suggests first half of 17th century. Former shelfmark: "249 T. De M. [i.e. Tammaro De Marinis]" inscribed in pencil on verso of front flyleaf ; "91" inscribed in pencil on 'title page' (p.3). Binding: Pasteboards covered in black leather with spine and foreedge in dark brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; doublures in deep red leather with dark brown leather filigree appliqué over blue paper ; pastedowns in salmon-colored paper ; upper and lower covers carry stamped and gold-painted mandorla (filled with vegetal composition, compare Déroche class. NSd 7), pendants and cornerpieces ; sewn in red thread, two stations, with many broken threads and hence loose quires ; worked chevron endbands in red and yellow, headband fully intact and tailband partially gone ; overall in poor condition with fair condition with abrasion, staining, lifting and losses of leather, pest damage, etc. Support: non-European (Persian) laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (mainly vertical with some curving and sagging) and regularly spaced chain lines faintly visible ; smooth and well-burnised ; some staining. Decoration: Elegant illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān) at the opening of each work (p.4 and p.126) each consisting of rectangular piece with cartouche carrying the basmalah surmounted by scalloped semi-circular piece (dome), both pieces filled with swirling vegetal floral design on fields of gold and lapis lazuli and surmounted by vertical stalks (tīgh) ; keywords rubricated ; text of written area surrounded by gold frame. Script: Naskh ; elegant Turkish or Persianate hand ; partially seriffed with right-sloping head-serifs on ascenders of letters lām, ṭāʼ, and ẓāʼ but not on free-standing alif ; curvilinear descenders ; rightward descenders tapered ; some elongation of horizontal strokes ; pointing in distinct dots ; fully vocalized. Layout: Written in 11 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: i, V-1 (9), 5 V(59), V+1 (70), 5 V(120), i ; chiefly quinions ; many quires loose ; pagination in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves). Title supplied by cataloguer. Ms. codex. Inscriptions in pencil on front flyleaf "249 T. De M.
