Notlar The text is concerned with the surgical treatment of 'watery hernia' or hydrocele. Following the surgical procedure, the text reads, 'Then wipe away the blood and insert into the opening wool which has been soaked in oil or in oil of roses, and then proceed to apply on top of that more wool soaked in wine (sharāb) and oil. And on top of that, place a folded cloth.' In the margin, someone (apparently the copyist himself) has written: ‘The copyist [of the exemplar] Ibn Fadl Allāh al-tabīb (the physician), may God forgive him, said: “Wine is an impure thing which we are not allowed to use [to treat] those who are sick amongst the community of Muhammad, peace be on him.” ‘ This is a copy of the surgical portion of the medical encyclopaedia.
