Born in 570 in the Arabian city of Mecca, Muhammad was orphaned at an early age and brought up under the care of his uncle Abu Talib. He later worked mostly as a merchant, as well as a shepherd, and was first married by age 25. Discontented with life in Mecca, he retreated to a cave in the surrounding mountains for meditation and reflection. According to Islamic beliefs it was here, at age 40, in the month of Ramadan, where he received his first revelation from God. Three years after this event Muhammad started preaching these revelations publicly, proclaiming that "God is One", that complete "surrender" to Him (lit. islam) is the only way (din) acceptable to God, and that he himself was a prophet and messenger of God, in the same vein as other Islamic prophets. Pošto se 570. godine nove ere rodio u arabljanskom mestu Meka, Muhamed je veoma rano ostao bez roditelja pa ga je podigao stric Abu Talib. Kasnije se uglavnom bavio trgovinomm kao i stočarstvom i prvi put se oženio sa dvadeset pet godina. Nezadovoljan životom u Meki povukao se u pećinu u obližnjim planinama da bi meditirao i razmišljao. Na osnovu islamskog verovanja, upravo je na tom mestu, kada je imao četrdeset godina, u mesecu ramadanu prvi put primio otkrovenje od Boga. Tri godine posle tog događaja, Muhamed je počeo da javno propoveda o tim otkrovenjima oglašavajući da je Bog jedan, da je potpuno predavanje njemu (doslovno, islam) jedini put (din) prihvatljiv Bogu i da je on lično prorok i vesnik Boga, u istom smislu kao i drugi islamski proroci.
