By Tafsîr bi-l-ishâra is meant the interpretation of the Qur'ân beyond its outer meanings, and the people practising it concern themselves with meanings attached to verses of the Qur'ân, which are not visible to anyone, but only to him whose heart Allah has opened. This kind of tafsîr is often found with mystically-inclined authors. While it must not be denied that Allah guides to the understanding of the Qur'ân whom He pleases and as He wills, it has to be said that tafsîr bi-l-ishâra is not a matter of science and scientific principles, which may be acquired and then used, as are the other branches of culum al-Qur'ân and of tafsîr. Pod terminom tafsir bil-išara podrazumeva se tumačenje Kurana izvan njegovog spoljašnjeg značenja i ljudi koji ga upražnjavaju staraju se o značenju koje pripada stihovima Kurana, a nije nikome vidljivo osim onima čije je srce Alah otvorio. Ovaj vid tafsira se često nalazi kod autora naklonjenih mistici. Dok se ne sme poreći da Alah vodi ka razumevanju Kurana onoga kojim je zadovoljan i kada on sam to želi, treba reći da taj tafsir bil-išara nije predmet nauke i naučnih disciplina koje se mogu naučiti i potom upotrebiti kao što je slučaj sa drugim granama kuranskih nauka i tafsira.
