This illustration occurs in the course of the commentary on the sixteenth section (fasl, which is concerned with types and qualities of waters) of the second sub-chapter on 'causes' in the second part (fann) on health and disease in general. This is a commentary on the first book of the Qānūn, generally known as al-Kulliyāt (the Generalities). The commentary is titled Sharh al-Kulliyāt al-Qanūn (A Commentary on the Generalities of the Qānūn) and was composed by Damascene physician Ibn al-Nafīs, who died in 687 AH/1288 CE.
