Jews and Christians used the interpretations in their traditions for their translations and commentaries on the Bible in the past. Besides tafsir, another Arabic word, ta'wil has been also used to denote the interpretation or reclamation of meanings of the Qur'an text. Some scholars believe that ta'wil is synonymous with tafsir,othershave denied and suggest that tafsir refers to the illumination of the external meaning of the Qur'an while ta'wil is the extraction of the hidden meanings. U prošlosti, Jevreji i hrišćani su se u svojim tradicijama bavili tumačenjem zarad prevođenja i komentara Biblije. Osim tafsira, koristi se još jedna arapska reč, tavil, za označavanje tumačenja ili objašanjavanja značenja kuranskog teksta. Neki naučnici smatraju da je tavil sinonim za tafsir, drugi to opovrgavaju i drže se stanovišta da se tafsir odnosi na rasvetljavanje spoljašnjeg značenja Kurana dok tavil predstavlja izvođenje skrivenog značenja.
