Every utterance of the Prophet, apart from the Qur'an, and his every deed, from the beginning of his mission to the last moment of his life, constitute his Sunnah, in the general sense of the word, whether these establish a ruling which is generally applicable to all members of the Ummah, or a ruling which applies only to the Prophet himself or to some of his Sahabah. Regardless of whether what the Prophet did was instinctive or otherwise, his every word, deed and approval may be taken as the basis for evidence in a legal ruling. Svaki izraz proroka Muhameda, osim Kurana i njegovih dela od početka misije do poslednjeg trenutka života, sačinjavaju sunu u opštem smislu te reči bez obzira na to da li oni postavljaju neko pravilo koje se može opšte primeniti na sve članove ume ili pravilo koje se odnosi samo na proroka lično i neke njegove pratioce. Bez obzira na to da li su prorokova dela bila instinktivna ili drugačija, svaka njegova reč, delo i odobrenje mogu biti uzeti kao osnova za dokaz nekog pravnog pravila.
