Dariush Mehrjui's The Cow won the hearts of moviegoers at the 1971 Venice Film Festival, where it was screened amid secrecy and controversy. It tells the not-so-simple story of Hassan (Ezzatolah Entezami), a farmer who forms an unexplainable bond with his cow. But when the valued animal dies, his dedication morphs into delusional sadness, and he begins to become his cow, a dumb animal whose fate is shaped by larger forces over which it has no control.
