bamboo boards, black spotted; The string which holds the leaves and the boards together has for endings at one end
Chinese copper (?) cash piece with a square hole, and at the other end 16 sided amber
coloured beads, worn by long use. Moreover under the bead a small piece of palmleaf
is strung on the string as a rider; it bears the inscription: “iti kawin brata yuda,
nga”, meaning: this is the kakawin Brata Yuda by name (see Schoem. I 11). — written carefully, though not beautifully The orthography shows some mistakes. — palm leaf — Kakawin Bhārata Yuddha is an ancient Javanese poetic rendition of some books (parva)
of the Mahabharata in Indian meters. Bhārata Yuddha means "India's War" or "War of Bhārat", and it is about the Kaurawas, the
descendants of King Kuru. With ca 100 manuscripts listed in the catalogues of public libraries in various countries,
Kakawin Bhārata Yuddha is by far the most frequently copied surviving Old Javanese
work. The scribe began to write in the middle of the 6th month of a year ‘6, and he finished
his work a year later on the first of the 7th month of a year ‘7; so he worked 12,5
month on the copy. He had the intention to mention the year numbers in full, the space
was left open. It was later only filled with the unit number, however. Probably the
scribe was not sure of the exact year number, especially the decade. This indifference
or ignorance regarding year numbers can be observed in many colophons. (The days,
weeks and months are registered scrupulously because they are important items in divinatory
calculations.)
