Possibly a furnishing or the clavi/sleeve strip of a tunic. Egyptian, ca. AD300-500. A band of interlaced medallions contains motifs of a hare alternating with a naked hunter carrying a shield. The imagery is of purple and undyed wool on a background of undyed linen. Either side of the band the linen is weft-looped. The linen is approx. 30x22 tpc with differing thread diameters. The naked warrior was a common motif that symbolised a fight with the bestial side of the self. As the hunter is naked the battle is one of the spirit not the flesh. Apparently from the same tunic as 199-1891.
