This was described as a modern Egyptian anklet ( Khulkhal ) when it was bequeathed to the Museum in 1904. It is not typical of Egyptian traditional jewellery today. The design is most common in Arabia, where objects like this are worn on the upper arm, but an example from the 11th century was found in an excavation at Jerusalem, and more modern examples, from the 19th century, have been recorded in Syria. Although Islamic traditional jewellery is very conservative in design and aspects of its form and function can be traced back for centuries, individual pieces rarely survive for more than a few generations. As most pieces in the V&A collection were acquired in the 19th century they often represent rare examples of objects which have gone out of use and may now have been totally forgotten in their home countries.

Fiziksel açıklama
Hollow silver anklet which is widest in the centre and tapers towards the ends, which overlap. Each end is capped with a dome of open filigree with a large loop attached. There is a ring of wire threaded through each loop, from each of which hang two spherical filigree buttons. The bracelet is decorated on the outside with a pierced diaper pattern interrupted by five ogival shields. The centre shield contains an Arabic inscription, and the four outer ones vegetal sprays. The anklet contains pellets which make a rattling sound when shaken.
