A bonnet of woven, decorated linen, probably for a child. Egyptian, El-Azam; ca. AD1000-1400. From a tomb. The bonnet is made from two quarter-circles of cloth sewn together. The lining is undyed, plain woven linen; approx. 14x16 tpc (sys 1 x sys 2). The covering is undyed linen with embroidered decoration in red and brown silk thread. The fabric is covered in brown lines (made of two lines of embroidered thread) that create diamonds. Where the lines meet a smaller diamond covers the join. At the centre of the larger diamonds is a cross icon in red thread. It has four, short arms and the end of each arm divides in two. The right side of the bonnet if formed of two pieces of the same fabric sewn so as to match the pattern. The edge of the bonnet is sewn with a plait of undyed linen. The front plaits are threaded through a loop at the bottom to enable the bonnet to be tightened. It is badly stained with some holes and silvery residue.
