Caucasian carpet, Daghestan. WARP: White wool; Z3S; 17 threads per inch (64 per dm); depressed. WEFT: light red in the lowest 41 cms and white wool; both are Z2S; 2 shoots of weft after each row of knots; 15 knots per inch (60 per dm). PILE: wool; 12 colours: red, yellow, green, dark blue, blue, light blue, purple, pink, dark brown , light brown, cream, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 128 knots per sq. inch (1920 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: missing; an orange cord has been added and is worn in places. END FINISH: Lower: missing. Upper: missing but with 3 cms of plain weave with yellow weft attached. DESIGN: Field: yellow ground with bands of rosettes, angular blossoms and small guls; between these are bands formed by curving stems with boteh-like leaves. There are also very small motifs along the sides - ewers, diamonds, S-motifs, etc. The field is edged with a dark blue saw-tooth pattern. Main border: white ground with angular motifs, mainly hooks in various colours, along a central axis. Inner and outer borders: blue ground with diagonal blocks, each diagonally striped in various colours.
