یادداشت‌ها	A pair of red leather shoes, Egyptian, ca. AD 700-1000 (possibly). Decorated with applied and painted gold leaf. Made with the turned technique with rand. These shoes were acquired from D.B.Myers Esq. Coptic footwear was generally made of leather, primarily using the turned technique to produce a slipper or shoe with a straight sole. Slippers often included a rand at the vamp and a fibre padded sole sewn together with prominent stitching or insole tab. They show variation in the form and height of the instep. Shoes were generally slip-ons and also show variation in the form and height of the instep. Footwear was highly decorated in geometric and floral designs. Often a variety of techniques were used in combination with the most popular being dyeing, gilding, openwork and appliquÃ©. This pair may be older as it has features not common to footwear of the 1st century.

Fiziksel açıklama	A pair of flat, red leather shoes. Egyptian, ca. AD 700-1000 (possibly). Pointed toe (cut flat at toe) and round heel. Turned technique with rand (4mm). Sole: Straight. Seat appears moulded into heel shape. Upper: One-piece. Topband (5mm wide) decorated over instep (mid-throat) around to waist with two fold lines either side of a band of squares and Xs. Topband tucks into top of backseam. Centre vamp decorated with two triangles of applied gold leaf on leather (appears glued) forming a 'tree' shape. Top triangle forms the tree body and points to the toe; it includes four small cutout chevrons along the sides and one chevron at the middle of the base. The chevrons point to the toe. The second triangle also points to the toe and forms the tree trunk. The triangles are outlined in a thin, dark border. Below topband, all around, is a row of applied, gold leaf 'button' shapes (12mm diameter). Each button has five cutout hole within. Three buttons also sit at the hell, below the other row.
