ملاحظات Nose rings are part of the traditional jewellery in the Syrian region, which incorporated much of Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon, as well as Syria itself, in the 19th century. They were mainly worn by Bedouin rather than urban women and their use almost certainly pre-dates the arrival of Islam. Nose studs, like this one, are much less common and may represent an earlier tradition which flourished in towns as well as the countryside. This example was acquired in 1873 as part of a large collection of typical jewellery from the area.
