Plain woven linen, tapestry woven wool and linen Linen Wool Plain Weave Tapestry Weave
Fiziksel açıklama
Rectangular panel of plain woven linen, with a tapestry woven double band of purple wool. All four edges of the panel have selvedges, and each shorter edge has fringes made from the warp ends. Below the tapestry woven decoration are three selfbands each formed of four linen wefts. The tapestry woven decoration consists of two horizontal lines, from which emerge a series of stylised cross-shaped leaves above and below. To both the left and right of the pattern the ground warp thread has been left open. There are several dark spots, and three holes, in the middle of the ground fabric, and in the upper portion a light brown dyed shadow of the tapestry pattern. It is possible that the fabric was folded whilst the wool was not fully dry, therefore transfering some of the dye to the ground fabric pressed against it. Ground fabric (warp-faced tabby): Linen warp (S-spun, 16/cm) Linen weft (S-spun, 10/cm) Tapestry weave: Linen warp (S-spun) Wool weft (Z-spun, 15/cm) Linen weft (S-spun) 8 ribs per cm
