Turkish prayer carpet of white silk ground with Ghiordes design in red, pale blue, pale green, black and faded yellows, browns and pinks. The stepped prayer arch is supported by double columns and contains a hanging lamp. The main border is on a pale green ground. Warp: white silk; Z3S; 36 threads per inch (120 per dm); depressed; Weft: white silk (?check); Z3S: 2 shoots after each row of knots; 25 knots per inch (104 per dm). Pile: silk; 10 colours: red, orange, yellow, green, light green, light blue, light pink, light brown, black, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 450 knots per sq. inch (6240 per sq. dm). Side finish: 3 cords overcast with white silk End finish: missing Design: Field: much faded ground, now white. Field outlined in red with a triangular stepped main niche and a small niche at either side. Between them are pairs of narrow red pillars 'fringed' with blue and decorated with a pink geometric meander with light green leaves. Between the bases of the 2 pillars are 6 red shrubs with a tulip-like flower, and beneath and along the 2 edges there is evidence of a line of light blue and pink triangles bearing red buds. From the apex of the niche hangs a lamp from a red chain, with an inscription, surrounded by leaves. The panel on which the niches lie shows traces of bands of small flowers and end in 10 small niches from which small blue plants rise and, between these, larger red and light green plants. The lower panel (as woven) has 5 blossoms on light brown stems with buds. The upper panel (as woven) has 7 linked, indistinct motifs and between each is a plant with a carnation. Borders (from the centre outwards): (1) yellow ground with outward growing small blue sprigs with red flowers (2) white ground (as main field) with small floral meander on light green stem (3) green ground with red rosettes alternating with blue and red blossoms, each with a pair of stylised leaves and pink blossoms and small white hyacinths and red carnations (4) as (2) (5) as (1) (6) undecorated white band with a blue line.
