Notlar Materials were created by Buchanan and remained in her possession from their creation until their transfer to the repository. The small artworks by other artists were either purchased by Buchanan, or, more commonly, were given to her directly as gifts from the artists.
Örnek Metin The Nancy Buchanan papers document the Los Angeles-based artist's career from the 1970s to the 2010s. Research and production files for her projects, including her major performances and video works, reflect Buchanan's exploration of politics, commerce, environmentalism, and feminism, and highlight her use of art as a tool for raising awareness of social issues. Audiovisual and digital components are present for many of Buchanan’s performance pieces, as are photographs of her artworks, exhibitions, and performances. The collection also includes assorted personal and professional correspondence, printed ephemera, teaching files from Buchanan’s tenure at the California Institute of the Arts, personal and family materials, papers related to her curatorial projects and collaborations, and artworks and artists’ books created or collected by Buchanan.Series I. constitutes the bulk of the collection and consists primarily of correspondence, ephemera, and notes that document the span of Buchanan’s artistic output, with files related to her performances, video art, and installations from 1970 to the early 2010s. Most files related to Buchanan’s performances and video art include photographic documentation, and many performance files also contain audio or video documentation. Also present, to a lesser extent, are drawings, grant applications, and objects and scripts used in performances.Series II. Professional files comprise documents that reflect Buchanan's scholarly approach to her projects, with research files, course lecture notes and presentations, and papers related to her curatorial projects and collaborations. Also included are various writings by Buchanan, published and unpublished, and color slide reference images of works by assorted twentieth-century artists.Series III. Personal papers comprises Buchanan's personal correspondence with friends and family, calendars and journals that document her social and professional engagements; and correspondence and photographs from both the paternal and maternal sides of her family, the Ridenours and the Hinckleys and Kraemers, respectively. Also present are childhood drawings; documents related to Buchanan's alma maters, the Laguna Beach High School and the University of California, Irvine; and a trove of intimate correspondence between Buchanan and her elder sister Eleanor Fay Ridenour Crow (Kitty), with numerous doodles and drawings.Series IV. Artwork and artists' books consists of works by Buchanan and by other artists. Works by Buchanan are primarily art objects, with several works on paper and artist book projects. Works by Buchanan with clear correlations to specific projects have been filed in Series I. Project files. The small artworks by other artists were either purchased by Buchanan, or, more commonly, were given to her directly as gifts from the artists.Series V. Audiovisual and digital materials contains audiovisual and digital materials that do not have a clear or unique correlation to materials found elsewhere in the collection. Upon reformatting of the items in this series, items may be integrated into another series based on content. The bulk of the series consists of sound and video recordings, including audiocassettes, audiotape reels, film reels, and videocassettes; digital materials include DVDs and appear to be primarily compilations of Buchanan’s assorted video art works, with one compilation of her performances Please Sing Along and Tar Baby.
