Notlar Three miniatures on two folios, identified by Robinson, p. 116, as coming from western India in the Sultanate period (mid-15th c.), partly on accont of the 'inferior quality' of the calligraphy. Reproduced in b/w on pp. 233-4. The text is on the reverse (verso) side of the folio, concerning the game of backgammon. The pictures are ordered here in the correct sequence, i.e. 354b (the story of Farud) comes before 354a.
Süsleme The Iranians mourn FarudFolio number: 001rNotes: Reproduced in b/w in Robinson, p. 233 (no. 52), who detects typical Indian work, under Shiraz influence, in the treatment of the brickwork. There is also a painting on the verso side. The top part of the folio together with the painting has obviously been pasted over a different sheet, for the text in the L-shaped passage to the bottom left of the folio does not fit the text block, and does not follow from the correct break-line after, the first misra' of which can be found at the bottom right of the painting. The last legible line on the folio as it currently stands is the first misra' of Mohl line 1494 in the same chapter, where Bahram goes to the battlefield to retrieve his whip. The picture itself is damaged at the left edge and was presumably originally larger at the base and squared off.Location in text:Mohl 13, Kay Khusrau (60 years), first line: 900, break line before: 915, break line after: 916.0, last line: None.Farud's mausoleumScene Title:The Iranians build a mausoleum for FarudFolio number: 001vNotes: Reproduced in b/w in Robinson, p. 234 (no. 53). The tear is also visible on this verso side of the folio, where again the text below and to the right of the picture does not follow from the text above it.The text at the top of the page continues from Mohl line 917, visible at the bottom right of the recto side. The text below and to the right of the picture here is from another passage. It is likely that the image was slightly stepped, and that lines 951and 952 were included on either side at the bottom of the picture. The catchword shows that the first line on the next folio was 953. As noted by Robinson, p. 116, this is an unusual subject for illustration, depicting the tomb built by the remorseful Iranians for Farud, before leaving to pursue their ill-fated campaign.Location in text:Mohl 13, Kay Khusrau (60 years), first line: 918, break line before: 950, break line after: 951.0, last line: 952.Buzurjmihr shows the Indian how to play backgammonFolio number: 002rNotes: The middle portion of the painting is patched with a piece of text.Reproduced in Robinson, p. 234 (no. 54), who has misidentified the scene. The text on the whole conforms well to the Mohl edition.Location in text:Mohl 41, Kisra Anushirvan (48 years), first line: 2824, break line before: 2844, break line after: 2845.0, last line: 2847.Buzurjmihr shows the Indian how to play backgammonFolio number: 002rNotes: The middle portion of the painting is patched with a piece of text.Reproduced in Robinson, p. 234 (no. 54), who has misidentified the scene.
