However, the picture comes under the rubric, Sugand khurdan-i Piran-i Visa ba Siyavush, and shows rather a tender scene, of the young Siyavush on the left embracing the older Piran, on the right. Both have horses standing by, and scene is set in an idyllic European landscape of distant hills, trees, and a river running through the left of the painting. Paints are missing in places. (F.A.). This is rather a strange scene, with the kneeling Khaqan in the foreground, and his elephant in the background on the right. The previous page has severla lines of chalipa script, and the las part of this page also has 2 lines taking up the space of several: this appears not to be a decorative function, so much as to resolve a problem of positioning the painting in the text. Directly above the painting is the rubric, "Razm-i Rustam ba Khaqan-i Chin guyad", i.e. this is a specific title for the painting, not the episde (the title for which comes earlier, on f. 201r). Interestingly, and most unusually, there follows on 202v a much larger picture of the famous moment when Rustam pulls the Khaqan off the elephant. It is therefore not clear at present what this painting is intended to show.Location in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 703, break line before: 705, break line after: 706.0, last line: 716.Bertels 18, Khaqan-i Chin (1422), first line: 683.0, break line before: 685.0, break line after: 686.0, last line: 716.Khaleghi-Motlagh 20, Kamus-i Kashani (2881), first line: 2163.0, break line before: 2165.0, break line after: 2166.0, last line: 2176.0.Rustam pulls the Khaqan of Chin from his elephant by lassoFolio number: 201vLocation in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 717, break line before: 723, break line after: 724.0, last line: 724.Rustam battles Kafur the Man eaterScene Title:Rustam fights Kafur the CannibalFolio number: 205rLocation in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 999, break line before: 1030, break line after: 1032.0, last line: 1030.Bertels 18, Khaqan-i Chin (1422), first line: 960.0, break line before: 986.0, break line after: 987.0, last line: 1030.Khaleghi-Motlagh 20, Kamus-i Kashani (2881), first line: 2438.0, break line before: 2464.0, break line after: 2465.0, last line: 2464.0.Rustam overthrows PuladvandFolio number: 209vLocation in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 1406, break line before: None, break line after: None, last line: 1427.Rustam rescues Bizhan from the pitScene Title:Rustam asks Bizhan to forgive GurginFolio number: 226rLocation in text:Mohl 13e, Bizhan and Manizha, first line: 1173, break line before: 1178, break line after: 1180.0, last line: 1186.Khaleghi-Motlagh 22, Bizhan and Manizha (1279), first line: 1069.0, break line before: 1074.0, break line after: 1076.0, last line: 1082.0.Bizhan kills HumanFolio number: 236vLocation in text:Mohl 13f, The Twelve Rukhs, first line: 807, break line before: 814, break line after: 815.0, last line: 822.Bertels 21, The twelve Rukhs (2518), first line: 794.0, break line before: 801.0, break line after: 802.0, last line: 822.Khaleghi-Motlagh 23, The eleven Rukhs (2521), first line: 803.0, break line before: 810.0, break line after: 811.0, last line: 818.0.Bizhan kills Nastihan during the night attack of NastihanScene Title:Nastihan makes a night attack and is killed by BizhanFolio number: 238rNotes: A large, rectangular, vigorous battle scene occupying the centre of the page, evidently not at night. Th exterior sides of the covers are decorated with two paintings, executed by one hand with a wide black frame with herbal ornament, where the baits ilustrating the scene are written in gold. Raqam-i Muhammad Hasan Shirazi, 1203.Paper - Oriental, creamy, very glossy; in good condition. The text is in a professional neat nasta‘liq in Indian ink, headings in red over a thick layer of very shiny gold surrounded by floral ornament in polychrome.ff. 1v-11r - prose introduction, incipit. Iftitah-i sukhan an...; ff. 7v-8v - satire on Mahmud contains 124 baitsff. 11v-12r - empty space.f. 12v - normative incipit of the poem.Explicit: hazaran durud-u hazaran salam / zi ma bar Muhammad alayhu-s-salamThe text is in the frames of very shiny gold, red, blue and grey lines. Illuminations on ff.1v-2r - sarlauh of a very refined hand in blue, red, pink, green, orange and gold with extremely small and neat details; ff. 12v-13r sarlauh of incredibly luxurious work.
