Rustam sleeps under a tree, but his white rug is shown as if it is floating in the air in front of the tree. He is talking to a tall courtier standing before him, presumably Giv. On the first plane, a soldier slays a bold bare headed man in his head, who is heavily bleeding. This must, from the context, be the captive Piran, but in this case, it is entirely against the meaning of the surrounding text, which describes how Farangis pleads for the life of Piran to be spared, upon which Kay Khusrau releases him to return to Turan. (F.A.).Location in text:Mohl 12e, Kay Khusrau comes to Iran, first line: 972, break line before: 980, break line after: 981.0, last line: 989.Farud comes to see his mother Jarira before the battleScene Title:Farud asks the advise of his mother Jarira about how to deal with the approaching Persian armyFolio number: 138vLocation in text:Mohl 13, Kay Khusrau (60 years), first line: 477, break line before: None, break line after: None, last line: None. The Khaqan learns of the killing of KamusFolio number: 167vLocation in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 19, break line before: 33, break line after: 34.0, last line: 46.Kay Khusraw and Rustam recieve a general reporting about the bootyScene Title:Rustam divides the bootyFolio number: 177rLocation in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 837, break line before: 856, break line after: 857.0, last line: 873.Akvan Div flings Rustam into the seaFolio number: 184vLocation in text:Mohl 13d, Rustam fights Akhvan Div, first line: 120, break line before: 122, break line after: 123.0, last line: 129.Bizhan is brought to the pitFolio number: 191vLocation in text:Mohl 13e, Bizhan and Manizha, first line: None, break line before: 477, break line after: 478.0, last line: 489.Kay Khusraw appoints Jahd as the king of Turan @ checkScene Title:In praise of Sultan MahmudFolio number: 202vNotes: The relationship of the painting to the text, which here is a passage in praise of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazna at the start of the story of the Great War, is not clear. Perhaps it is Mahmud on the elephant, perhaps there is no conection with the text at all. It may concern a later scene, where Afrasiyab prepares for war.Two riders are dressed identically: in similar white turbans with pink hats inside and black feathers, jackets long dresses. Perhaps Afrasiyab is sitting on the elephant and his son Shida on the brown horse, although Afrasiyab's figure is much smaller than that of Shida. Both figures are smaller than in the other miniatures. The rather amusing white elephant has a headcloth. (F.A.).Location in text:Mohl 13g, The Great War between Kay Khusrau and Afrasiyab, first line: None, break line before: None, break line after: None, last line: None.Giv gives Siyavush's flag to BizhanScene Title:Giv gives Siyavush's flag to BizhanFolio number: 209vLocation in text:Mohl 13f, The Twelve Rukhs, first line: 694, break line before: 707, break line after: None, last line: 717.Gudarz mourns the dead PiranFolio number: 222vNotes: The picture has nothing to do with the text.Location in text:Mohl 13f, The Twelve Rukhs, first line: None, break line before: 2052, break line after: None, last line: None.Kay Khusrau kills GuruyFolio number: 226vNotes: The miniature is inserted in the text describing the mourning for Piran and the execution of Guruy (dakhma kardan-i kay Khusraw Piran-ra va va saran-i Turan va kushtan-i Garuy Zara). However what is depicted is a battle scene, where a horseman on a white horse is cutting the head of another horseman, falling down from his blue horse, which is comparatively small. The king in the gold crown and gold jacket is standing behind the hill, but is not watching the scene. The painting is torn in the middle. (F.A.).Location in text:Mohl 13f, The Twelve Rukhs, first line: 2331, break line before: None, break line after: None, last line: 2351.Rustam battles Turanians (not in SN)Scene Title:Kay Khusrau prepares to ride against AfrasiyabFolio number: 229vNotes: Despite its place in the text, this is another typical battle scene, where Rustam, mounted on his horse is shooting an arrow at the enemies on the opposite (left hand) side of the picture. Behind Rustam is probably Kay Khusrau, sitting on a black elephant. He is wearing a gold jacket and a gold crown of very unusual shape: it is just a small hat with three long and black feathers - one on top and two over his ears. (F.A.)Location in text:Mohl 13g, The Great War between Kay Khusrau and Afrasiyab, first line: None, break line before: 160, break line after: 161.0, last line: 180.Kay Khusrau fights ShidaFolio number: 234vNotes: The painting depicts the parley before the battle.Location in text:Mohl 13g, The Great War between Kay Khusrau and Afrasiyab, first line: 650, break line before: 664, break line after: 665.0, last line: None.Hum captures Afrasiyab ?Scene Title:Kay Kavus and Kay Khusrau come to HumFolio number: 251vNotes: The painting is placed in the text at the point where Afrasiyab is bemoaning his fate in the cave, overheard by Hum. It is possibly supposed to depict the rather later scene, after Afrasiyab's escape, when Kay Khusrau and Kay Kavus go to find Hum, who relates his story and proposes the way to recapture Afrasiyab. Kay Khusrau and Hum are depicted in the cave, where Hum, dressed not less luxuriously than Kay Khusrau, in a gold jacket with jewels, is sitting on the green carpet, while Kay Khustrau is standing before him. The landscape is presented as mountainous area with parts in different colours: green, lilac, orange, pink, and blue, under a the gold sky. (F.A., Ch.M.). The breaklines are not in Mohl. Perhaps Afrasiyab is sitting on the elephant and his son Shida on the brown horse, although Afrasiyab's figure is much smaller than that of Shida. Both figures are smaller than in the other miniatures. The rather amusing white elephant has a headcloth. However what is depicted is a battle scene, where a horseman on a white horse is cutting the head of another horseman, falling down from his blue horse, which is comparatively small. The king in the gold crown and gold jacket is standing behind the hill, but is not watching the scene. The painting is torn in the middle. Behind Rustam is probably Kay Khusrau, sitting on a black elephant. He is wearing a gold jacket and a gold crown of very unusual shape: it is just a small hat with three long and black feathers - one on top and two over his ears.
