Notlar The first sheet acquired during Andre Leth's directorship of the David Collection, in 1981.A further folio subsequently acquired for the collection, from this Second Small Shahnama. For 12/1990, see Kjeld von Folsach, Art from the world of Islam in the David Collection, Copenhagen 2001, pp. 46, 70 (no. 26); and idem, For the privileged few. Islamic miniature painting from the David Collection, Copenhagen and Louisiana 2007, p. 36 (no. 7) and for 19/2006, For the privileged few, p. 37, no. 8, identified simply as 'Tabriz?, 1300-1340', recognising the uncertainties surrounding the exact dates and place of production of these early copies.See further, Meyer and Wandel, Colorful epic, pp. 98-99, 198-199: the dimensions of the folios vary:12/1990: 245x185, text 170x133; 19/2006: 202x164,text 164x130.
Süsleme Rustam's second labour: he finds a spring and kills an onagerFolio number: 001Notes: The painting appears to be inserted in the text at the wrong place (probably pasted over the missing lines), which is from the story of isfandiyar (Mohl, bk. 4; Dabir-Siyaqi, chapter 15); the line before the picture is Mohl, v. 874 and after it, v. 908. The rubric, concerning Gushtasp putting Isfandiyar in chains, anticipates the text by 50 verses. The picture itself is identified by von Folsach (The privileged few, p. 37, no. 8) as Rustam washes his horse Rakhsh, i.e. an episode in the 'Haft khwan' story, which is cleafrly correct: the title here then, reflects the image not the text. The dimensions of the leaf are given as 163x125 mm.Location in text:Mohl 12, Kay Kavus (150 years), first line: None, break line before: None, break line after: None, last line: None.Hurmuzd forces his high priest to eat poisoned foodFolio number: 002Notes: Published by Kjeld von Folsach, Art from the world of Islam in the David Collection, Copenhagen 2001, pp. 46, 70 (no. 26). Also, idem, For the privileged few, p. 36 (no. 7), where it is identified as 1300-40, Tabriz? Previously presented at Sotheby's sale, 1975, lot 22.This scene is also found in the 'First' Small Shahnama, in the Chester Beatty, 104.69, see Simpson, The illustration of an epic, p. 395.  The dimensions of the leaf are recorded as 240x185 mm. See also Meyer and Wandel, Colorful epic, pp. 198-99, no. 54. Location in text:Mohl 42, Hurmuzd (14 years), first line: 65, break line before: 101, break line after: 102.0, last line: 136.
