Notlar Formerly Ethé 876. Eighteenth-century leather binding with medallions, rebacked. The ms. has a good quality illuminated double title-page (ff. 1v-2r) and 63 miniature paintings. The first 59 of these are of the Isfahan school of the period, possibly by the same artist as the "young Isfahani" of the Garshaspnama in the British Museum. The last 4 are rather different; Robinson proposes a provincial, possibly Turkish hand (which would seem to be borne out by the name of the signatory of the ms. itself), though nearly contemporary with the manuscript. The text is not subdivided into books. One characteristic of the paintings is that the picture is carried into the spaces between the columns of text.BibliographyH. Mohl, II, p. 511. However, the painting is located in the text several sections later, after Afrasiyab has in turn raised an army of revenge, after the death of Pilsam, and in the middle of the battle that ensues between Rustam and Afrasiyab (see Mohl, II, p. 516). The missing rubric above the painting was probably intended to intoduced a different scene.Location in text:Mohl 12e, Kay Khusrau comes to Iran, first line: 305, break line before: 321, break line after: 322.0, last line: 324.Bertels 15, Kay Ka'us - Siyavush (3775), first line: 2860.0, break line before: 2875.0, break line after: 2876.0, last line: 324.The combat of Bizhan and FarudScene Title:Farud shoots Bizhan's horse from under himFolio number: 145rNotes: The painter depicts the moment when Bizhan's horse has just be shot from under him.The artist is possibly correct in showing Farud mounted - it is not clear from the text, but the implication is perhaps that Bizhan on foot then pursues Farud on horseback and wounds his horse.Location in text:Mohl 13, Kay Khusrau (60 years), first line: 788, break line before: 813, break line after: 814.0, last line: 814.Bertels 16, Kay Khusrau (1655), first line: 782.0, break line before: 800.0, break line after: 801.0, last line: 814.Bizhan cooking watched by Palashan mountedScene Title:Bizhan comes upon Palashan cooking a gazelleFolio number: 147rLocation in text:Mohl 13, Kay Khusrau (60 years), first line: 965, break line before: 979, break line after: 980.0, last line: 981.Bertels 16, Kay Khusrau (1655), first line: 942.0, break line before: 956.0, break line after: 957.0, last line: 981.Tus shoots the horse of HumanScene Title:Human fights TusFolio number: 157vNotes: Tus has shot Human's horse, as in the text.Location in text:Mohl 13b, Kamus-i Kashani, first line: 272, break line before: 275, break line after: 276.0, last line: 281.Bertels 17, Kamus-i Kashani (1472), first line: 262.0, break line before: 265.0, break line after: 266.0, last line: 281.Rustam shoots Ashkabus and his horseScene Title:Rustam kills Ashkabus and his horseFolio number: 169vLocation in text:Mohl 13b, Kamus-i Kashani, first line: 1409, break line before: 1419, break line after: 1421.0, last line: None.Rustam lassoing KamusScene Title:Rustam captures and kills KamusFolio number: 171vLocation in text:Mohl 13b, Kamus-i Kashani, first line: 1571, break line before: 1576, break line after: 1577.0, last line: 1581.Rustam lifting Shangal from his horse on the point of his spearScene Title:Rustam lifts Shangul from his saddleFolio number: 177vLocation in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 540, break line before: 546, break line after: 547.0, last line: 548.Bertels 18, Khaqan-i Chin (1422), first line: 518.0, break line before: 525.0, break line after: 526.0, last line: 548.The Persians defeat the army of the Khaqan and Afrasiyab in a general engagementScene Title:The defeat of the Turanian armyFolio number: 180rLocation in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 742, break line before: 746, break line after: 747.0, last line: 754.Bertels 18, Khaqan-i Chin (1422), first line: 711.0, break line before: 715.0, break line after: 716.0, last line: 754.Combat of Rustam and Puladvand, the latter represented as a demonScene Title:Rustam overthrows PuladvandFolio number: 186vLocation in text:Mohl 13c, Rustam and the Khaqan-i Chin, first line: 1381, break line before: 1393, break line after: 1394.0, last line: 1396.Bertels 18, Khaqan-i Chin (1422), first line: 1284.0, break line before: 1294.0, break line after: 1295.0, last line: 1396.Akvan Div flings Rustam into the seaFolio number: 189rNotes: Reproduced in b/w in Robinson, India Office Library, p. 202.Location in text:Mohl 13d, Rustam fights Akhvan Div, first line: None, break line before: 114, break line after: 115.0, last line: 117.Gurgin telling his false story of Bizhan's disappearance before Kay khusrauScene Title:Gurgin tells his story to Kay KhusrauFolio number: 197vLocation in text:Mohl 13e, Bizhan and Manizha, first line: 607, break line before: 611, break line after: 612.0, last line: 616.Bertels 20, Bizhan and Manizha (1312), first line: 565.0, break line before: 569.0, break line after: 570.0, last line: 616.Rustam appears before Kay khusrau before setting out to rescue BizhanScene Title:Rustam feasts with Kay KhusrauFolio number: 200vLocation in text:Mohl 13e, Bizhan and Manizha, first line: 842, break line before: 851, break line after: 854.0, last line: 857.Bertels 20, Bizhan and Manizha (1312), first line: 781.0, break line before: 791.0, break line after: 793.0, last line: 857.Human challenges FariburzFolio number: 212vNotes: The correct identification of this scene is provided by the surrounding text, cf.
