Notlar Recto: letter in which a woman pleads with her husband to return home after he chose to abandon her in a dispute over having to stay with her family and to have to pay rent there, too. The woman states she will fast until the matter is resolved. The letter displays careful square writing and Arabic vocalisation (suggesting familiarity with Arabic script), which makes it less likely that the letter was written by the woman herself. Verso: reply by the husband in which he swears that if she fasts he will not return even on the Sabbath (as he has been doing).
İlişkili Ad(lar) Lewis, Agnes Smith, 1843-1926; Gibson, Margaret Dunlop, 1843-1920
Durum Holes, rubbed
Fonlama The purchase, conservation and digitisation of the Lewis-Gibson Collection at Cambridge University Library has been made possible with the assistance of grants from the Polonsky Foundation, the Parasol Foundation, and a generous donation made through the assistance of the late Robert (Roby) Littman, a Director of the Littman Library of Jewish Civilisation, as well as with the support of other individuals and charitable institutions.
