He was later better known as a Persian scholar and academic, becoming Professor of Arabic and Persian at the East India College, Haileybury in 1824, where he was later appointed Registrar. Örnek Metin	Bound manuscript of commentary on the poetrical works of Khāqāni, in Persian, transcribed by Muhammad Ali Beg. Included is annotation that states "the work was completed at Lahore in A.H. 1507. This copy was written at the request of Henry George Keen [sic, Keene] at Calcutta [sic, now Kolkata] and completed on... 25th February 1803 A.D. The scribe is Muhammad Ali Beg". With a manuscript annotation and signature of Keene in ink dated 1811, Sidney Sussex College.[Keene matriculated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge on 13 November 1811, where he graduated in 1815; he subsequently retired retired from the Indian civil service].
