A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire.
[Ottoman Iraq], Muscat, Zanzibar, Aden, and the Suez Canal in Egypt. Subjects include declarations of the British victory over the Sikh Kingdom [the Sikh Khāliṣah] and the occupation of the capital, Lahore; descriptions of the Jewish community of Bagdad [Baghdad]; the mistreatment of women; the suppression of the trade of enslaved people from Africa; reactions of the East India Company to the murder of an Arab villager; pilgrimage to Kerbella [Karbala] and Mecca; the persecution of Shia [Shīʿah] Muslims in Ottoman dominions; the sale of looted property and jewellry from Scinde; British and Russian relations at the Court of Persia; the relationship between learning English and rationality; and public disorder and plunder on the southern coast of Persia. This volume additionally includes several printed works and a hand drawn plan. Several enclosures have been removed at a later date (indicated within the relevant descriptions).
