Notlar Zulaykha pulls Yūsuf's coat as he leaves, from Rosary of the Pious (Subḥat al-abrār) by Jāmī (d. 1492). Composed in 1481, Jāmī's poem contains 40 sections or "knots" (`aqd), each dedicated to a Sufi principle, with a narrative episode to illustrate the point. Here, the Qur'anic prophet Yūsuf (Joseph in the Old Testament) rushes away from his employer's wife Zulaykha (Potiphar's wife), resisting her attempts to seduce him. A golden statue sits in the alcove behind them, half-concealed by a curtain: Zulaykha had gone to draw the curtain over her sacred idol, so it could not watch them. Reflecting that his own God could see all things, Yūsuf left the room hastily. Folio, ink, colours and gold on paper, Persian text in nasta`liq script, with full page painting (on verso), from Rosary of the Pious (Subḥat al-Abrār) by Nūr al-Dīn `Abd al-Raḥmān Jāmī (d. 1492), detached from codex CBL Per 238, Bukhara, Uzbekistan, undated, c. 1560-1570.
