Iskandar relaxes with Queen Nūshāba of Barda’, from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī. The fifth poem in Niẓāmī’s Khamsa is the Book of Alexander (Iskandar nāma), which describes the life and career of the historic Alexander of Macedon (d. 323 BC), called Iskandar in Persian literary tradition. The first section follows his conquests across Eurasia. Towards the end, he formed a new alliance with the wise Azeri queen Nūshāba, at the time of the spring equinox and the Persian New Year (Nawrūz). In celebration, Iskandar held a banquet in Nūshāba’s honour, outside in the spring sunshine. Folio, ink, colours and gold on paper, Persian text in nasta`liq script, with painting (on recto) and framed rubric (on verso), from Book of Alexander (Iskandarnāma), in the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī Ganjavī (d. 1209), Iran, text copied by `Alī al-Kātib (final colophon in codex Per 182, fol. 331v), dated (codex Per 182, fol. 29v) Shawwal 915H, January 1510, painting c. 1550.
