Notlar	Qur'an from Timurid Herat This magnificent copy of the Qur'an was produced at the Timurid court in Herat, almost certainly for Prince Baysunghur (d. 1433). The first page-opening is a double-page composition of illumination, with a radiating geometric star pattern. This deliberately echoes designs from the late thirteenth century, although the central lobed medallion is very much up to date for Timurid design. The Timurid calligrapher has also referred deliberately to the late thirteenth century, by signing in the name of the highly-regarded master-calligrapher Yaqut al-Musta`simi, who died in 1298. A very similar Qur'an was signed by the Timurid master-calligrapher Shams al-Baysunghuri, in 1434 (837H), and is today in the Turkish and Islamic Art Museum in Istanbul (TIEM 294). Codex, ink, colours and gold on paper, 273 folios, Arabic text in naskh script, and angular kufic for first two sura headings, with initial double frontispiece of radial strapwork (fols. 1v-2r), complete Qur'an, colophon (fol. 273v) attributed (in homage) to the celebrated calligrapher Yaqut al-Musta`simi (d. 1298), Herat, Afghanistan, c. 1430.
