Notlar Kitāb al-Fihrist, by Ibn al-Nadīm (d. 990). This is an important early copy of the renowned Fihrist by Ibn al-Nadīm (d. 990), a comprehensive catalogue of all known authors whose books were available to interested readers in late tenth-century Baghdad. Probably from Mosul in northern Iraq, the author was a book-dealer (warrāq) based in Baghdad. He compiled his encyclopaedic account of Arabic written culture over many years, gathering biographical information on authors and listing their known works, ordered by topic, over ten chapters (interchangeably called maqāla or juz’ in this copy). Ibn al-Nadīm completed his great bio-bibliographical work in 987-988 (377H). The unidentified scribe of this manuscript checked and corrected it against the author’s original autograph copy (in the author’s hand, bi-khaṭṭ al-muṣannif), probably in Baghdad. This is supported by the specific gaps throughout the text which suggest reference to an early copy of the Fihrist. The clear and relatively angular form of the fine script allows a date attribution to the late tenth century, shortly after the text’s completion by Ibn al-Nadīm (d. 980) in 988. Critically, the biography entry for al-Marzubānī (fol. 77v) records that this author had died in 994: the scribe points out (in the margin) that this particular line was in a different hand, in the version he was working from. Centuries later, in 1421 (824H), this particular manuscript was consulted by the Mamluk historian Taqī al-Dīn al-Maqrīzī (d. 1442), who left notes (fol. 1r) confirming this. Codex, ink and gold on paper, 119 folios, modern bookbinding, Arabic text in naskh script, with illuminated title heading (fol. 1r), the Catalogue (Kitāb al-Fihrist) by Abū al-Faraj Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Nadīm al-Warrāq, known as Ibn Abī Ya`qūb al-Warrāq, also known as Ibn al-Nadīm (d. 990), the bio-bibliography of Arabic written culture, incomplete text, chapter 1 through to chapter 5 section 1 only, with missing 2nd quire (within chapter 1 section 1 to 3) and missing text (chapter 4 section 2: possibly not in the reference copy either), this copy checked against the author’s autograph manuscript (dustūr), unsigned, probably Baghdad, Iraq, undated, c. 995-1000.
