Notlar Fragment of a papyrus roll preserving a portion of the funerary ritual 'Opening of the mouth,' dated to third century BC and made in Egypt. The text was read at the completion of a statue, by touching its lips with a special tool so the image could receive the soul of the deceased or deity. This allowed the soul to enjoy offerings of food, drink and incense presented by priests of a cult or relatives of the deceased.
