Tinted drawing and calligraphy, folio from an album for Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah (d. 1612). This folio was once part of a calligraphic poetry album, produced for Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, who ruled the Deccani sultanate of Golconda, in India. Some of the sultan's own poetry (beautifully written out by his court calligraphers) is included in the compilation, as well as these older examples (Per 225.4) of fine calligraphy, tinted drawing and gold-painted borders from Iran. There are at least fifteen known folios from this album, which was also re-bordered at a late date. Folio, ink, gold and colours on paper, mounted on card, tinted drawing of a hawk attacking a heron, with foxes, a monkey, other birds and a large flying insect in the surrounding landscape, with inscription (lower left) attributed to Bihzad, dark blue main border with gold-painted monkeys, birds and deer in landscape (on recto), and calligraphy in Arabic (in thuluth and naskh scripts) and Persian (in nasta`liq script) quoting the bismillah and describing the Prophet, unsigned (on verso), folio from an album compiled for Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah (r. 1580-1612), calligraphy, tinted drawing and blue borders Iran, c. 1550-1600, album assembly Golconda and Hyderabad, Deccan, India, c. 1590-1605
