Sufis performing samā` before their master Shaykh Niẓām al-Dīn Awliyā (d. 1325), from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Amīr Khusrau (d. 1325). These Sufis are performing the mystical ritual of samā`,in which the group combines music and movement with spiritual remembrance of God. Seated on a carpet at the head of the room, their master Shaykh Niẓām al-Dīn Awliyā (d. 1325) observes the group. He was (and remains) a revered leader of the Chishtiyya Sufi order in India. The poet Amīr Khusrau (the composer of this poem), was also one of Shaykh Nizam al-Din’s followers, and is buried at his tomb in Delhi. Folio, ink, colours and gold on paper, Persian text in nasta`liq script, with painting (on recto), from the Rising Lights (Maṭla` al-anvār), from codex (CB Per 163) of the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Amīr Khusrau (d. 1325), copied by Muḥammad ibn Aẓhar, Herat, Afghanistan, dated 1 Rajab 890H, 14 July 1485.
