Papyrus letter and agricultural lease for the tax year 290H (903). This papyrus folio was used twice, first as a letter (on the verso side, written in the eighth century) and then for an agricultural legal contract in the year 903 (290H, on the recto). With papyrus breakage at the top and bottom of the folio (on the verso), some text is lost from both start and finish of the letter, but the surviving text begins with blessings wished on the addressee, and asks for a favour. Much of the detail is unclear: the sender requests politely that the addressee might undertake some task for their benefit, and mentions a third person who has passed on some information. On the recto of the papyrus folio the text is complete, and contains an agricultural lease (Ar. qabāla) dated to the month Dhu al-Hijja of the year 290H (October-November 903). The contract is issued by the tenant (mutaqabbil) Mīnā son of Qultah for grazing land (marj wa-marāʿ) on estates belonging to the amir in the town of Ṭuṭūn in the district of Fayyūm for the tax year (kharāj) 290H. Folio fragment, ink on light brown papyrus, mounted on paper and framed under glass, original cutting lines preserved on the left and right sides, top and bottom edges broken off with some loss of text, Arabic text in two different hands, letter between unnamed correspondents (verso, written perpendicular to the fibres) and agricultural lease (qabāla) issued by Mīnā ibn Qultah for grazing land (recto, written parallel to the fibres), text on verso written first, after which the folio was re-used to write the recto text, unsigned, Ṭuṭun (southern Fayyum), Egypt, contract (recto) dated Dhū al-Ḥijja 290H, October-November 903.
